AI Can’t Replace Us: Why Human Expertise Still Wins in Presentation Design

It’s astonishing to me just how many calls I get lately from people asking, “Can’t AI just do this?”

And I get it—AI tools are evolving fast, and they’re great for quick, one-off tasks. But let me cut to the chase: when it comes to presentation design?
AI isn’t going to give you the results you actually want.

Let’s talk about why.

AI is a Tool, Not a Solution

I’ve tested a few of these AI-powered presentation tools (more on that later—stay tuned for what I found, and where AI might help you!), and here’s the reality: AI can generate slides, but it can’t craft a strategic, audience-driven presentation that aligns with your brand, messaging, and long-term goals.

Here’s where AI falls short:

One-size-fits-all solutions – AI engines work off templates and generic structures. They don’t account for company-wide brand consistency or messaging evolution.

Lack of adaptability – Your decks should adjust based on audience, context, and last-minute changes. Let’s be honest: you wouldn’t be presenting if it wasn’t important! AI won’t fine-tune your messaging with you at midnight before a major keynote.

Surface-level design – AI-generated slides may look polished at first glance, but they often require heavy adjustments to fit your unique needs.

I love a good tech tool as much as anyone, but AI should support the process—not replace a skilled presentation designer. Your brand needs consistency and expertise to get that crucial presentation right.

The Human Advantage: What Companies Like Ruby + Citrine Do Best

At Ruby + Citrine, we do more than just build decks—we create presentations that drive action, inspire audiences, and help businesses grow. AI can’t do what we do because:

We work with speakers to refine messaging in real-time. A slide deck isn’t just about design—it’s about storytelling. We collaborate with presenters across multiple versions, making adjustments up until the last minute to ensure the message lands.

We ensure brand consistency across all decks. AI-generated presentations often fail to match company branding, leaving teams with a hodgepodge of mismatched slides. We make sure every presentation is an evergreen asset that works seamlessly within your company’s ecosystem.

We adapt and problem-solve on the fly. Last-minute event changes? Need to shift the tone for a specific audience? We do this in real-time—something AI simply can’t handle.

The bottom line? Hire a designer. Use AI as a tool, but hire a designer.

Tested a Few AI Tools – Here’s What I Found

I’ve tested a few AI-powered presentation tools, and while some have their uses, none of them can replace human expertise. Here’s what I found:

🖥️ Beautiful AI – It gets you part of the way there, but you still need to know what you’re doing in PowerPoint to fine-tune the results. Plus, if you’re not a strong storyteller, AI won’t magically create compelling content for you. And your data sets? Well, it can display data, but it can’t create meaning from it or organize it in a way that makes sense to your audience. It also struggles with brand consistency, requiring a human touch to align visuals with your company’s style.

✍️ Jasper & ChatGPT – These tools are great for brainstorming and content refinement. We use them to research for our podcast, outline ideas, and even adjust tone for different brands. But while they speed up the process, they don’t replace the strategic thinking needed for high-stakes presentations.

🎨 Adobe Express – This tool is useful for quickly formatting content across different platforms, which is a game-changer for marketing. However, it only gets you about 25–30% of the way there. You still need a person to tweak, adjust, and ensure everything looks polished.

The Future of Presentation Design: Human + AI Working Together

AI isn’t going anywhere, and it shouldn’t. Used well, AI can enhance our workflows and automate repetitive tasks. But when it comes to high-stakes presentations, major business pitches, and speaker support—human expertise is non-negotiable.

At Ruby + Citrine, we’re not just designers. We’re partners in helping your message land exactly right.
